KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has denied issuing a series of anti-corruption messages that have recently circulated among WhatsApp users in Malaysia, particularly ahead of the Sabah state election.

The viral messages, which warn against bribery, extortion, embezzlement, fraud, and other corrupt practices, have raised concerns among the public about their authenticity.

According to a report by Sinar Harian, the MACC confirmed that it did not send any such WhatsApp alerts, stressing that all official announcements are communicated through its legitimate channels, including mainstream media platforms.

“The public should be cautious and not easily deceived by messages from unknown sources, as there is a risk of manipulation by irresponsible parties for various purposes,” the MACC said in an official statement on Friday (Nov 21).

The commission also reminded both candidates and voters in the upcoming Sabah polls to avoid any involvement in corrupt activities. Individuals who encounter or witness such misconduct are urged to report it directly to the MACC.

To support election monitoring, the MACC said its Operations Room has been operating since Nov 10 at five locations across Sabah: Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Tawau, Lahad Datu, and Keningau.

Members of the public may lodge complaints or submit information through official MACC channels, including the MACC Portal, the Corruption Complaints Portal, the 1-800-88-6000 hotline, or the MACC Mobile app.

The commission advised Malaysians to remain alert and verify any suspicious messages to prevent the spread of misinformation during the election period.
