KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 2 (VoM): Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed deep sorrow over the devastating earthquake that struck Cebu and surrounding areas in the Philippines, leaving dozens dead and hundreds injured.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Anwar conveyed Malaysia’s heartfelt condolences to the government and people of the Philippines, noting the profound grief and hardship faced by affected families.
“I am deeply saddened by the devastating earthquake that has struck Cebu and neighboring areas of the Philippines. The loss and hardship endured by so many families weigh heavily on us, and Malaysia mourns with the people of the Philippines in this time of grief,” Anwar said.
He extended sympathies to the families of victims and offered prayers for the injured and displaced. “On behalf of the Government and people of Malaysia, I extend our heartfelt condolences and sympathies… Our thoughts and prayers are also with the injured, the displaced, and all those whose lives have been disrupted by this tragedy.”
Reaffirming Malaysia’s solidarity, Anwar pledged support for relief and recovery efforts in the Philippines. “Malaysia stands in full solidarity with the Philippines. We will do what we can to support relief and recovery efforts, and we pray that the strength and resilience of the Filipino people will carry them through these difficult days,” he said.
The powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck Cebu late Tuesday, toppling buildings, triggering landslides, and leaving at least 69 people dead. Rescue operations remain ongoing as authorities search for survivors.
