GEORGE TOWN: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested five police personnel, including a senior officer, on suspicion of soliciting and accepting bribes totaling around RM9,000.

The arrests, carried out at the MACC Penang office between 2pm and 5pm on Monday (Sept 1), involved officers aged between their 20s and 40s.

According to sources, the policemen allegedly conspired during an operation in Seberang Perai, where they were accused of demanding bribes in exchange for not taking action against individuals suspected of possessing stolen motorcycles.

“One of the suspects is believed to have collected cash bribes from a motorcycle workshop owner,” the source said.

Penang MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy confirmed the arrests, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009, which pertains to the offense of soliciting or receiving gratification by an officer.

All five suspects were remanded for 24 hours before being released on bail pending further investigations.
