Malaysia Reaffirms Support for China’s Global Governance Initiative at SCO Plus Summit

TIANJIN: Malaysia has expressed strong support for China’s newly introduced Global Governance Initiative, describing it as a timely effort to strengthen multilateralism at a period of growing global instability.

Prime Minister [Name] said this during his participation at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Plus Summit, chaired by Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin today.

The Prime Minister highlighted the SCO’s significant progress in economic cooperation, public health, security, and energy transition, noting that these areas align closely with Malaysia’s policies and ASEAN’s priorities.

“At a time when multilateral institutions are faltering, and the United Nations no longer carries the aspiration to reform itself, this initiative is crucial. The gap between rhetoric and reality has allowed disparities to widen and atrocities to occur without accountability,” he said.

Malaysia, he added, supports the initiative, as it reflects values of justice, compassion, humanity, and cooperation, with multilateralism at its core. However, he stressed that these principles must be translated into real and tangible actions.

The Prime Minister also drew attention to the erosion of trust in the global system, citing failures in establishing fair trade practices, reforming financial structures, and addressing the climate crisis.

He reminded delegates of the significance of China’s upcoming commemorations of its wartime resistance and the end of World War II, describing them as a rejection of aggression, colonialism, imperialism, and oppression.

Turning to current crises, he condemned the ongoing atrocities in Gaza and Palestine, where “innocent children are murdered without mercy,” and noted that the violence has also spilled into Lebanon, Iran, and Iraq.

“This is why Malaysia firmly supports the Global Governance Initiative and urges it to be pursued with greater determination to end all forms of imperialism, colonialism, and oppression,” he said.

He concluded by calling for the international community to “press forward with courage, guided by justice, humanity, and compassion, to build a world where peace and harmony prevail.”
