LONDON: British actor Micheal Ward, best known for his role as Jamie in Netflix’s Top Boy, has been granted bail after appearing in a London court to face charges of rape and sexual assault.

The 27-year-old faces two counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault linked to alleged offenses against a woman in January 2023. The case first came to public attention last month.

Ward appeared briefly at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, confirming his personal details but entering no plea. He was released on conditional bail ahead of his next hearing at Snaresbrook Crown Court on September 25. His bail terms prohibit him from contacting the alleged victim.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed they are continuing to provide support to the complainant.

Ward has denied the allegations, stating previously that he has “full faith” in the judicial process and is confident his name will be cleared.

The Jamaican-born actor rose to prominence with the film Blue Story and has since starred in The Book of Clarence and the political satire Eddington, alongside Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal. In 2020, he won the BAFTA Rising Star Award and has since received further nominations for both film and television roles, including Empire of Light and Steve McQueen’s Small Axe.
