In an interview with NBC News, Governor Gavin Newsom of California said that the fires were probably the worst natural disaster in US history in terms of how much it cost.

The governor signed an order briefly lifting environmental rules for destroyed homes and businesses to help speed up the huge rebuilding project that was still ahead.

During the day on Sunday, firemen in the air dropped water and retardant. Some of them were scooping water from the Pacific Ocean. On the ground, crews with hand tools and hoses held the Palisades Fire back as it moved into Los Angeles’s high-end Brentwood neighborhood and other populated areas. Firefighters have taken control of 11% of the fire’s perimeter, which means that the fire has burned 23,713 acres (96 sq km), or 37 square miles.

In the last day, firefighters raised the containment of the Eaton Fire from 15% to 27%, which means that it now covers 22.4 miles (57 square kilometers).

Authorities from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) said that the Hurst Fire was 89 percent contained north of the city and that three other fires that had destroyed other parts of the county were now 100 percent contained. However, fires may still be burning inside the control lines.

Later in the week, Santa Ana winds hit hurricane force, but they finally slowed down this weekend, giving firefighters a short break from the weather. Flamers and coals were blown up to 2 miles (3 km) ahead of the front lines by dry winds coming from the inland deserts.

But the National Weather Service said Santa Ana winds of 50 to 70 miles per hour (80 to 112 kph) would start again on Sunday night and last until Wednesday in an area that hasn’t had any significant rain since April.
