After a sandwich made by one of its food suppliers was discovered to have improperly utilized a Malaysian halal certificate, KK Super Mart filed a lawsuit against the supplier.

In a statement released on Monday, January 13, the company stated that “KK Super Mart has taken action by filing a police report on January 11 over this matter.”

According to the corporation, KK Super Mart has also ceased all commercial interactions with Shake and Bake Cafe Sdn Bhd, the sandwich provider.

“KK Super Mart has also directed its legal team, David Gurupatham & Koay (Advocates & Solicitors), to send Shake And Bake Cafe Sdn Bhd a letter of demand dated January 10, 2025, regarding this matter,” the firm stated.

Last week, a sandwich pack that was offered at a KK Concept Store in Universiti Malaya and was labelled as a “ham & cheese sandwich” sparked a stir as it showed the Malaysian halal emblem.

On January 10, two KK Super Mart locations in UM were shut down after inspections by the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry and the Islamic Development Department (Jakim).

Shake And Bake Cafe Sdn Bhd, the sandwich provider, had supplied a halal certificate for the chicken ham and cheese layers for reference, according to KK Super Mart’s statement.

Additionally, according to KK Super Mart, Shake And Bake Cafe Sdn Bhd was not permitted to utilize the KK Super Mart logo on the sandwich package.

According to the company, the sandwiches were only sold at 16 KK Concept stores, and KK Super Mart is taking precautions to ensure that the product does not get into any of its other locations.

From the standpoint of law enforcement, we know that on January 10, 2025, Jakim and the ministry raided the Shake And Bake Cafe Sdn Bhd factory.

“We are ready to offer our full assistance. Additionally, KK Super Mart takes the situation seriously and reiterates its dedication to working with law enforcement to support investigations,” the statement read.
