US Concerned About Taiwan’s Defence Delay, Worries About ‘Concession’ to China

Reuters reports that the U.S. State Department voiced alarm on Tuesday about the delays in Taiwan’s military spending, stating that any more delay could be perceived as a “concession” to China.
Following the recent approval of a supplementary defence funding package by the opposition-controlled parliament, the Defence Ministry of Taiwan detailed the consequences for several military programmes if they were not included.

In an effort to fortify Taiwan’s military and stave off mounting Chinese pressure, President Lai Ching-te has pledged an additional $40 billion in defence spending.
Taiwan is a democratic self-governing island that China asserts as its own. The island has been the target of increasing political and military pressure from China in recent years.
The U.S. State Department warned that Taiwan’s defence investment cuts or delays could be perceived as political concessions to Beijing and undermine deterrence.
Defence authorities on Taiwan have expressed concern that the island may be ill-prepared to deal with rising regional tensions as a result of the rejected projects’ potential effects on military readiness and modernisation plans.
The matter highlights the ongoing geopolitical tension in the Taiwan Strait, where the US, China, and Taiwan continue to clash for military preparedness and international backing.
