WASHINGTON, 23 June— According to two senior U.S. officials, the United States fears Iran may soon conduct reprisal assaults against American personnel stationed in the Middle East after U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear targets over the weekend.
Although attempts are still being made to defuse the situation diplomatically, one official told Reuters on condition of anonymity that Tehran’s retaliation might occur in the next 24 to 48 hours.
The insider stated, “Iran could strike back very soon, possibly within a day or two,” adding that Washington is still working toward non-military means of preventing a more extensive regional crisis.
Context: Increasing Tensions Between the United States and Iran
Iran has denounced the bombing of three Iranian nuclear facilities in Isfahan, Natanz, and Fordow by U.S. military forces as a blatant breach of its sovereignty and international law, prompting the warning.
Since then, Iran’s highest military leadership has stated that all options are available to protect the nation’s interests, and the government has threatened to strike back.
President Donald Trump of the United States acknowledged the strikes over the weekend, calling them a preventative action in response to Tehran’s growing threats. But military analysts and international policy experts worry that the actions could spark a wider regional conflict, particularly in light of Iran’s ongoing Operation True Promise III attacks on Israeli targets.
Open Diplomatic Channels
Although retribution is a real possibility, U.S. officials emphasized that Washington is not pursuing direct conflict with Iran and that diplomatic channels are still available.
One official stated, “We are making every effort to stop the situation from getting worse.” “However, we are ready to defend our forces and regional allies.”
Impact and Readiness at the Regional Level.
According to reports, American military installations in the area, such as bases in the Gulf, Syria, and Iraq, are on high alert and have more air defense systems in place in case Iran launches an attack.
Additionally, regional allies have been informed about the potential for Iranian reprisal, and some countries have advised their citizens not to go to high-risk regions of the Middle East.
The international community is closely monitoring the escalating tensions, fearing that they could spark a larger military conflict, further engulfing the already vulnerable region.
