Turkey Pushes to Extend Iran-US Ceasefire Amid Fragile Nuclear Talks

ANKARA: Turkey is intensifying diplomatic efforts to extend the fragile ceasefire between Iran and the United States, while urging all sides to keep negotiations alive despite ongoing tensions.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Ankara is actively engaging with Tehran, Washington, and mediator Pakistan to reduce hostilities and sustain dialogue.

“We are conveying the necessary suggestions and carrying out initiatives to ease tensions, extend the ceasefire, and maintain talks,” Erdogan told lawmakers in parliament, stressing that diplomacy must remain the priority.

Erdogan acknowledged that while negotiations have not collapsed, they have hit significant hurdles, particularly over Iran’s nuclear program.

“Statements by the sides show that the negotiation table has not been overturned, but they have reached a roadblock on the nuclear issue,” he said.

He also warned of rising tensions around the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key global transit route, which could further complicate efforts toward stability.

The Turkish leader pointed to Israel’s recent military actions in Lebanon as another factor undermining hopes for peace in the broader region. He urged all parties to seize the opportunity created by the current ceasefire window.

“There can be no negotiating with clenched fists,” Erdogan added, calling for restraint and constructive engagement.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump indicated that talks with Iran could resume soon and potentially lead to a deal, despite last weekend’s talks in Pakistan ending without a breakthrough.

In a sign of increasing regional diplomacy, foreign ministers from Turkey, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt are expected to meet on the sidelines of an upcoming forum in Antalya. Shehbaz Sharif is also scheduled to attend.

Despite current challenges, Erdogan expressed cautious optimism, saying that complex issues could be resolved over time if all sides remain committed to peace.

“There may be difficulties and complicated issues that will take time to solve, but with a long-term perspective focused on peace, most of these can be overcome,” he said.

As diplomatic efforts continue, Turkey’s role as a regional mediator highlights ongoing attempts to prevent further escalation and keep the path toward a negotiated settlement open.
