KUALA LUMPUR: United States (US) President Donald Trump is set to hold an expanded bilateral meeting and signing ceremony with Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits on Sunday (Oct 26).
According to the official schedule published by America’s Roll Call, Trump will arrive in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday morning to attend the ASEAN Summit’s opening ceremony before meeting Prime Minister Anwar in the afternoon at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).
The bilateral meeting is expected to focus on semiconductor tariffs, trade and investment, regional security, and cooperation on sustainable development—key issues highlighted earlier by US Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard D. Kagan.
Following his talks with Anwar, Trump will join Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Premier Anutin Charnvirakul for a signing ceremony in the evening, reportedly related to a border dispute settlement between Cambodia and Thailand.
The US president is also scheduled to take part in the 13th ASEAN-US Summit and a working dinner with ASEAN leaders before departing for Tokyo on Monday. There, he will meet Japan’s first female prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, before heading to Busan, South Korea, for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit on Wednesday.
This visit marks Trump’s first official trip to Asia since returning to the White House and the first by a US president to Malaysia in a decade, following Barack Obama’s visit in 2014.
Malaysia, as the 2025 ASEAN Chair, is hosting the 47th ASEAN Summit under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability.” The event, running from Oct 26 to 28, will bring together leaders from all 10 ASEAN member states, alongside major dialogue partners including the US, China, Japan, South Korea, and India.
Other world leaders expected to attend include Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, European Council President António Costa, and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
