KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has achieved significant progress in advancing its ASEAN economic priorities, with seven out of 18 Priority Economic Deliverables (PEDs) fully completed and another five set to be finalized by the upcoming 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits.
Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the accomplishment reflects Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening regional economic integration and enhancing ASEAN’s global competitiveness.
“The 18 Malaysia-led PEDs are designed to deepen regional integration, boost trade and investment, and accelerate digital connectivity to link ASEAN’s nearly 680 million people into a more cohesive economic community,” he said during a press conference following the 26th ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Council meeting on Thursday.
According to Tengku Zafrul, the five PEDs expected to be delivered by the summit include two landmark economic agreements, the Second Protocol to Amend the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA) and the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area (ACFTA) 3.0 Upgrade Protocol.
“These agreements are crucial to deepening ASEAN’s economic integration and strengthening engagement with external partners,” he said. “With forward-looking provisions, we expect them to future-proof ASEAN’s trade architecture while reaffirming our commitment to an open, inclusive, and rules-based trading system.”
Tengku Zafrul expressed confidence that the remaining six PEDs will be successfully completed by the end of 2025, aligning with Malaysia’s goal to ensure a dynamic and resilient ASEAN economy.
The 47th ASEAN Summit, which Malaysia will host in Kuala Lumpur from October 26 to 28, carries the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability.” The event will gather leaders from all 10 ASEAN member states and major dialogue partners, including the United States, China, Japan, South Korea, and India.
