Newly Remanded Individuals Should Not Be Humiliated With Orange Uniforms – Tuan Ibrahim
KUALA LUMPUR: Individuals who have just been remanded and have not yet faced any charges should not be humiliated by being made to wear lock-up uniforms and handcuffs when brought to court.
PAS Deputy President, Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) decision to suspend the wearing of orange uniforms for individuals under investigation (OKS) is a positive step.
“When they are dressed in orange, handcuffed, and so on, it gives the impression as if they are already guilty or being tried in court.
“We need to conceal shame and should not humiliate someone who is merely brought to court for a remand extension. I think the immediate suspension of this practice is a positive step,” he said.
He said this to reporters after delivering a speech at the Diamond Jubilee 75 Years of PAS Central Grand Ceremony in Kota Bharu, last night.
Earlier, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was reported to have said that individuals detained by the MACC no longer need to wear orange uniforms when brought to court for remand proceedings.
Anwar opined that individuals who give full cooperation in an investigation should not be made to wear the uniform when brought to court before being officially charged.
On the same day, the MACC announced the immediate suspension of wearing orange uniforms for OKS brought to court for the purpose of remand applications.
MACC Chief Commissioner, Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman, said the measure was taken following current developments and recent suggestions regarding the procedures for handling OKS, particularly when they are brought to court.
