WASHINGTON, Sept 28 (VoM): US President Donald Trump suggested on Sunday that a breakthrough in the Middle East crisis could be imminent, signaling optimism ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the White House.
“We have a real chance for GREATNESS IN THE MIDDLE EAST,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account. “ALL ARE ON BOARD FOR SOMETHING SPECIAL, THE FIRST TIME EVER. WE WILL GET IT DONE!!!”
The remarks come just days after Trump hinted to reporters in Washington that “a deal” on Gaza may be within reach. His comments fuel speculation that the US could be brokering a new diplomatic initiative in the region, though details remain unclear.
Netanyahu, who is scheduled to meet Trump on Monday, has recently doubled down on his hardline stance against Palestinian statehood. In his address to the United Nations on Friday, the Israeli leader pledged to block the creation of a Palestinian state while vowing to “finish the job” against Hamas. His speech came shortly after Britain, France, and other Western countries announced recognition of a Palestinian state.
The war between Israel and Hamas has entered its most devastating chapter since the militant group launched its unprecedented assault on Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,219 people, mostly civilians, and taking 251 hostages. According to Israeli authorities, 47 of the hostages remain in Gaza, with 25 confirmed dead.
Israel’s retaliatory military campaign has left Gaza shattered. More than 65,549 Palestinians, also mostly civilians, have been killed, according to the territory’s health ministry, whose figures the United Nations deems credible.
As Netanyahu prepares to meet Trump in Washington, observers say both leaders face mounting international pressure to chart a new path forward. Whether Trump’s “something special” signals a genuine diplomatic breakthrough or merely heightened rhetoric remains to be seen.
