The importance of human rights parallels the concept of Madani Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: The importance of human rights is in line with what is brought up in the concept of Madani Malaysia, said the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Bernama reported, he said, the matter was raised during a meeting with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk in Parliament yesterday.
“A country needs to have a vision based on the basic values needed in a harmonious, prosperous and peaceful society without forgetting the concept of courtesy and human rights,” he said.
He said Volker and his delegation’s visit to Malaysia was at the invitation of the government as part of the country’s ongoing efforts to foster cooperation with the United Nations to increase awareness and understanding of human rights for all citizens to enjoy.
In a separate post on his Facebook, Anwar received a courtesy visit from the Minister of State for Foreign Trade of the United Arab Emirates, Thani Ahmed Al-Zeyoudi.
Among the matters discussed in the meeting, which was also attended by the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Tengku Zafrul Aziz, was bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the economic field.
“Alhamdulillah, many collaborations have been worked on between agencies and companies of both countries before and also planned in the future.”
According to him, a more cohesive and close commitment is expected to be explored through deeper economic cooperation, particularly through the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) that is being negotiated.
Tengku Zafrul said that both countries confirmed their commitment to sign the agreement this year.
As Malaysia’s first free trade agreement with members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), it is expected to pave the way towards deeper economic cooperation and foster a conducive environment for increased trade and investment flows of both countries, Asean and the GCC region in general.
