Sudan warns genocide escalating in Al-Fashir amid international silence

KHARTOUM — Sudan’s Foreign Ministry has condemned what it described as “horrific terrorist crimes” committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia in Al-Fashir, accusing the group of carrying out ethnically motivated killings and systematic terror against unarmed civilians.

In a strongly worded statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said the RSF had besieged and starved residents of Al-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur State, for more than two years before launching a “genocidal massacre” that has shocked the nation.

“The Dagalo terrorist militia continues to commit atrocities against innocent civilians — including women, children and the elderly — in scenes they themselves proudly document, revealing their criminal nature that thrives on bloodshed and terrorism,” the statement said.

The ministry said the RSF’s campaign against the Sudanese population represents a grave new chapter in global records of genocide, branding the militia as a “symbol of ethnic cleansing and mass extermination.”

Al-Fashir, a key humanitarian hub in North Darfur, has become the latest epicentre of violence in Sudan’s 18-month conflict between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). The RSF, which evolved from Darfur’s notorious Janjaweed militias, has long been accused of atrocities and war crimes, particularly in Darfur and El Geneina.

The Sudanese government said it had repeatedly warned the international community about the consequences of silence and inaction, urging the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2736 (2024).

However, Khartoum said the absence of global political will had emboldened the militia to “continue shedding innocent blood, destroying cities, and violating the dignity of citizens.”

The ministry also accused certain countries of “politicising the Sudanese crisis” and prioritising their own political and economic interests over humanitarian concerns — a stance it said directly contributed to the massacre in Al-Fashir.

“The innocent residents of Al-Fashir have become victims of double standards that deny Sudanese citizens justice and the human rights the international community claims to uphold,” the statement added.

Reaffirming its commitment to defend the country, the ministry quoted the President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces as saying that the SAF and other regular forces, with the full backing of the Sudanese people, would continue to “protect the nation, restore security, and achieve a just and lasting peace.”

The statement concluded that those responsible for the atrocities “shall not go unpunished,” pledging Sudan’s determination to pursue accountability for all acts of terror, killings, and genocide.
