Selangor, April 18: Authorities in Selangor have initiated an investigation into a viral social media video alleged to have defamed the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais).
State police chief Shazeli Kahar confirmed that a formal police report was lodged on April 16, prompting immediate action by law enforcement.
According to police, the complainant claimed that the video contained serious allegations, including accusations of corrupt practices and misuse of royal immunity. The content was said to have been deliberately crafted to tarnish the reputation of both MAIS and the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais).
“Following the report, a comprehensive investigation has been opened,” Shazeli said in a statement. He added that the case is being investigated under Section 500 and Section 504 of the Penal Code, as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Authorities have urged the public to refrain from speculation or sharing unverified information while the investigation is ongoing. Police warned that irresponsible comments or posts could disrupt public harmony and unity.
The case highlights growing concerns over the misuse of social media platforms to spread potentially defamatory content, with officials emphasizing the need for responsible online behavior.
