Ipoh, 8 October: Police in Perak have seized a massive haul of drugs worth approximately RM12.9 million after a 2 km high-speed chase along the North-South Expressway near Slim River.
Perak Police Chief Comm Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the dramatic incident unfolded around 1.30pm on Monday (Oct 6) when a Bukit Aman highway patrol unit attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle at KM375 southbound.
“Upon being signaled to stop, the car carrying two male suspects sped off, prompting officers to give chase. The pursuit lasted about two kilometers before the vehicle came to a halt. The suspects then fled on foot into a nearby forest,” he said during a press conference on Wednesday.
A search of the vehicle uncovered 15 gunny sacks filled with what is believed to be 374 kg of methamphetamine, along with one black plastic bag containing about 11.3 kg of heroin. The drugs were stored in the backseat and trunk of the car and packed to resemble commercial health and beauty products, apparently to deceive both the police and the public.
“The drugs were not hidden in secret compartments but were openly packed in branded containers, likely to avoid suspicion,” said Comm. Noor Hisam.
Authorities believe the seized drugs were destined for distribution in the Klang Valley, potentially supplying an estimated 3.7 million addicts.
“The vehicle used was found to be legally registered to a woman. She will be called in to assist with the ongoing investigation,” he added.
Comm Noor Hisam confirmed that a large-scale manhunt is underway to track down the two suspects who fled into the forest.
Police have classified the case under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty upon conviction.
