JOHOR BAHRU: Clear skies marked the start of the early voting process for the Johor State Election (PRN) today, with security personnel beginning to arrive as early as 7.30 a.m. to fulfil their responsibilities.
The atmosphere at polling centres, which opened at 8 a.m., showed favourable weather conditions, thus facilitating the movement of security personnel and Election Commission (SPR) officers who arrived early.
Although the weather at most polling locations was good in the morning, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) forecast thunderstorms across the state in the afternoon.
A total of 64 polling centres were opened today, involving the participation of 24,751 early voters comprising 12,041 Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) personnel along with their spouses, as well as 12,710 Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) officers and General Operations Force (PGA) members with their respective spouses.
A Bernama survey at several polling centres, including the 5th PGA Battalion Camp in Simpang Renggam, the Johor Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK), and the Mahkota Camp in Kluang so far, found that the voting process was running smoothly and orderly.
Earlier, before the polling centres opened, SPR officers made final preparations and stood ready to ensure that the voting process proceeded smoothly according to schedule.
Early polling centres will be closed in stages between 12 noon and 6 p.m., depending on the location and the number of registered voters at each centre.
This Johor State Election involves 2,727,926 eligible voters at 1,140 polling centres.
Overall, the 16th Johor State Election sees 172 candidates contesting for 56 State Legislative Assembly (DUN) seats, with regular polling day set for this Saturday.
