GEORGE TOWN, Oct 13: The Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) in Penang has arrested a retired army officer for allegedly accepting RM405,000 in bribes from a company owner linked to the sale of Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association (PVATM) assets at below market value.

According to sources, the suspect, aged in his 60s, was detained around 10am on Monday when he appeared at the Penang MACC office to provide a statement regarding the investigation.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the offences took place around 2015, when the suspect was serving as the information chief of PVATM,” said a source familiar with the case.

The investigation found that the suspect allegedly solicited and received RM405,000 in bribes from the sale of five PVATM apartment units located across Penang. The funds were reportedly deposited into his personal bank account through 12 separate transactions.

Penang MACC Director Datuk S. Karunanithy confirmed the arrest, stating that the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009, which pertains to the acceptance of gratification by an officer.

“The suspect is expected to be charged at the Butterworth Sessions Court on Wednesday (Oct 15),” Karunanithy said.

The MACC continues to tighten enforcement measures against corruption involving veterans’ associations and public institutions, reaffirming its commitment to uphold transparency and integrity in the management of public assets.
