KAJANG, May 29 – Local e-hailing service provider GV Ride is targeting the provision of 1,000 electric vehicles (EVs) under a lease-to-own scheme starting next year, aimed at enhancing sustainability and ensuring the long-term welfare of its drivers.

GV Ride Chief Executive Officer, Kabeer Maand, said the project was initially scheduled to begin early 2025 but has been delayed due to shipping delays from manufacturers in China.

“It was supposed to start early this year. However, due to delays from the manufacturer in China, it’s been slightly postponed. Next month, we’ll be receiving the first batch of vehicles for approval from the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

“From there, we expect to get JPJ approval by October or November this year and will begin the program,” he said during the “Kayuh & Menang” Prize Giving Ceremony hosted by GV Ride, held here today.

According to Kabeer, the program aims to help full-time e-hailing drivers transition to EVs through an affordable ownership model that does not require a large upfront payment.

“We’re planning to start with 1,000 lease-to-own EVs. Drivers don’t have to pay a high upfront cost to get the car.

“There may be a deposit of around RM2,000 to RM3,000. Then, they can lease-to-own the EV over five years. We will start switching from conventional cars to EVs next year,” he explained.

He added that priority would be given to full-time drivers due to their higher and more consistent vehicle usage, which helps cover the operating costs of EVs.

Meanwhile, GV Ride also announced a RM10 fare discount promotion for June, focused on areas including Subang, Kuala Lumpur, Universiti Malaya (UM), and universities in the Hulu Langat area, as an initiative to support student mobility.

With the implementation of this project, GV Ride is expected to become one of the pioneers in introducing clean energy transformation to the local e-hailing industry.
