PETALING JAYA: Harimau Malaya players must prioritise the nation’s honour every time they don the national jersey, rather than being overshadowed by pressure to meet demands for results until it affects their performance on the field.
Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) President Datuk Ab Ghani Hassan said every player representing the country carries a great responsibility because they defend Malaysia’s flag on the international stage.
“This is what I always say: play for the country and not for anyone. When we go onto the field, we carry the nation’s flag. Don’t let people make a mockery of us when we play.
“Play well and as best as possible. The result is another matter, but when we show a good performance even if we do not succeed, people will respect us,” he told the media.
He said players’ commitment and dedication when representing the country must be a priority to restore supporters’ confidence in Harimau Malaya, especially when national football faces various challenges.
He said the trust and support of fans also play an important role in shaping players’ spirit and sense of responsibility to give their best performance, whether with the senior or development squad.
“When players feel they have the support of the country and the people, they will be more responsible. That is important because such support can lift the players’ spirits,” he said.
Accordingly, Ab Ghani said FAM will continue to drive the organisation of tournaments at various levels to ensure the country’s football development continues for the nation’s future.
For the record, the national senior squad is scheduled to play two Tier 1 international friendlies against China and Yemen on 14 and 17 November this year at the Zhaoqing New District Sports Center Stadium, Guangdong, China.
Meanwhile, the national Under-16 (U-16) squad under Shukor Adan will face the challenge of the AFC U-17 Asian Cup Qualifiers, held at Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium, Cheras, starting this Sunday until 20 November.
Malaysia have been drawn in Group E with Palestine, India, Singapore and Guam, with the campaign being another important platform for the country’s young players to prove Malaysia’s ability on the international stage.
