National sepak takraw tekong Mohammad Syahir Mohd Rosdi expressed his feelings over the significant difference in incentive payments between the team gold medal, which Malaysia had waited 36 years to win at the Asian Games, and gold medals won in individual events.
In a social media post, Syahir admitted that he had to accept the reality that the national sepak takraw squad received RM15,000 each under the Sports Victory Prize Scheme (SHAKAM) for their team gold medal achievement.
“Oh Allah, I feel like crying, but as an athlete, I have to accept it. After a 36-year wait for an Asian Games team gold medal, we received RM15,000 each through the SHAKAM incentive presentation.
“Meanwhile, an individual event gold medal earns RM80,000 per athlete. We face the same sacrifices and pressure. The gold medals won are equally a source of pride,” he said.
However, Syahir stressed that the situation would not dampen his determination to continue giving his best commitment towards improving the performance of Malaysian sepak takraw.
He also expressed his appreciation to the President of the Sepaktakraw Association of Malaysia (PSM) for the continuous support given to players both on and off the court.
Syahir also acknowledged the sacrifices of his teammates, who had devoted their energy, time and effort to realising the dream of bringing home the gold medal.
“Whatever happens, we, as Malaysian sepak takraw players, will continue striving to uphold the good name of the sport and improve our performance from time to time.
“Nothing can stop us from continuing our efforts to elevate the status of sepak takraw in Malaysia. For you, Malaysia,” he said.
