JOHOR BARU, Oct 20: Police in Johor have issued a total of 968 summonses and arrested 26 individuals, including a teenager, during a large-scale traffic and crime prevention operation held across the city over the Deepavali long weekend.

Johor police chief Comm Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the special operation took place on Sunday (Oct 19) night at multiple key locations, including residential areas, entertainment outlets, shopping centers, temples, highways, and the Johor Causeway.

“During the operation, police screened 6,107 individuals and inspected about 5,000 vehicles. As a result, 968 summonses were issued for various traffic offenses, such as driving without a valid license, illegal vehicle modifications, and the use of fancy number plates,” he said in a statement on Monday (Oct 20).

He added that 26 suspects aged between 15 and 46 were detained for offenses related to traffic and drug violations.

Authorities also seized 170 vehicles, including 165 motorcycles and five cars, as part of the operation, which involved 1,238 police officers from various departments.

Comm Ab Rahaman said the large-scale operation was part of the police’s continuous efforts to ensure public safety and smooth traffic flow throughout the festive period.

“The Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department has been actively monitoring major routes to manage congestion and ensure the safety of road users during the Deepavali celebrations,” he said.

He also warned motorists to expect heavier traffic along major roads, especially in both directions of the North-South Expressway in Johor.

“We urge the public to plan their journeys early, follow traffic regulations, prioritise safety, and avoid driving when fatigued or under the influence of alcohol,” he reminded.
