KUALA LUMPUR: The visit of Christopher Luxon, who is making his first visit to Malaysia since becoming Prime Minister of New Zealand in November last year, is evidence of his serious commitment to further harmonizing relations between the two countries.

According to the Wilayahku portal, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that the long-standing defense cooperation between Malaysia and New Zealand, which dates back to World War II, is now being expanded into various aspects and opportunities for mutual benefit.

“The direct benefits will certainly be felt not only through regular bilateral defense cooperation but also across trade and investment, tourism, agriculture, education, defense and security, halal industry, renewable energy, and disaster management,” he said on Facebook.

Anwar noted that last year, New Zealand was Malaysia’s 28th largest trading partner, the 22nd largest export destination, and the 27th largest source of imports among countries in the Oceania region.

“May a brighter future emerge through this meaningful visit and the bilateral cooperation and discussions it fosters,” he said.

Earlier, Luxon, who is on a three-day official visit to Malaysia, was given an official reception at Dataran Perdana, Putrajaya, yesterday.

Luxon, who arrived in Malaysia the day before for his first visit, was welcomed by Anwar upon his arrival at 9:30 a.m., followed by the playing of both countries’ national anthems.

Luxon then inspected the main honor guard consisting of three officers and 103 members from the First Battalion Royal Malay Regiment, led by Major Khairul Fakhzan Zainol Abidin.

The two leaders are expected to discuss issues related to bilateral relations and cooperation under the Malaysia-New Zealand Strategic Partnership established in 2023, focusing on four pillars: Prosperity, People, Planet, and Peace and Security.

The total trade between Malaysia and New Zealand amounts to RM11.56 billion (US$2.54 billion).
