Nepal Unrest: Death Toll Rises to 30 as Army Takes Control, No Consensus on Interim Leader

KATHMANDU, Sept 10 (VoM): A fragile calm returned to Nepal’s capital on Wednesday following two days of violent protests that left at least 30 people dead and forced Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to resign.

The Nepal Army has been deployed across Kathmandu and other major cities to restore order, as government buildings and residences of political leaders remain heavily guarded. The protests, initially triggered by a controversial social media ban, rapidly grew into a mass uprising against corruption, poor governance, and political apathy.

Led largely by students and young citizens under the banner of the “Gen Z movement,” demonstrators stormed parliament and torched several government properties. The violence, which escalated after 19 people were killed on the first day of clashes, has drawn global attention to Nepal’s deepening political crisis.

Despite the lifting of the social media ban late Monday, protesters have continued to demand sweeping reforms and accountability from the political elite. Negotiations on forming an interim government remain deadlocked, with no consensus yet on who will take charge.

India has issued a travel advisory urging its citizens in Nepal to remain indoors, while several Indian airlines suspended flights to and from Kathmandu, citing security concerns.

The situation remains tense, with observers warning that unless political leaders quickly find common ground, Nepal risks sliding into prolonged instability.
