Michigan, USA, September 29:A deadly attack at a church in Michigan has left at least four people dead and eight others injured after a gunman opened fire and set the building on fire. The incident took place on Sunday morning (September 28) at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc. The suspected shooter has been identified as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford, a former U.S. Marine.
According to police, Sanford rammed his pickup truck into the church’s main entrance before storming inside with an assault rifle. He then opened fire indiscriminately on worshippers and later set the building ablaze, triggering panic and chaos. Security forces quickly responded, and Sanford was killed at the scene in an exchange of gunfire.
A U.S. Marine Corps spokesperson told CNN that Sanford served from 2004 to 2008 and held the rank of sergeant. During his service, he received multiple medals and was deployed to Iraq in the summer of 2007 as part of “Operation Iraqi Freedom.” He also served in Japan before leaving the military.
Social media posts and family sources reveal that Sanford was married and had a son. The child was diagnosed at birth with a rare genetic condition, congenital hyperinsulinism, which required multiple surgeries and long hospital stays. The cost of treatment placed the family under heavy financial strain, forcing Sanford to take extended leave from his job as a truck driver for Coca-Cola.
Sanford’s mother had shared photos on Facebook showing his passion for hunting, with images of deer and other animals he had hunted.
Despite his military background and personal hardships, the motive behind the Michigan church attack remains unclear. Investigators are now looking into his mental health, financial struggles, and family life to determine what may have driven him to such violence.
The local community has been left shaken by the tragedy. Vigils are being held outside the church, with mourners lighting candles and laying flowers in memory of the victims.
