KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a tropical depression warning after detecting a weather system moving slowly towards the north-northeast near the coast of Terengganu.
In a statement released on Friday, MetMalaysia’s National Weather and Earthquake Operations Centre reported that the tropical depression is currently located about 50 kilometers southeast of Kemaman and is moving at an estimated speed of 2 km/h.
The system is capable of producing maximum wind speeds of up to 56 km/h, raising concerns over potentially hazardous weather conditions for coastal and maritime areas.
According to the department, the tropical depression may bring continuous heavy rainfall, accompanied by strong winds and rough sea conditions over parts of the South China Sea, particularly affecting fishermen, vessels, and coastal communities.
Authorities have advised residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to remain alert, as persistent rain could increase the risk of flash floods and river overflows. Maritime operators are also urged to exercise caution and monitor updates issued by MetMalaysia.
The department said it will continue to track the system closely and issue further advisories as needed.
