The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) recorded a customer service rep’s statement on Thursday. The rep is thought to have posted highly offensive content that touched on racial issues on X.
The MCMC said that the statement was taken at the Brickfields District Police Central Station.
“The man’s phone and SIM card have been taken away for forensic examination.”
A statement said, “The case is being looked into under Section 233 (1) (a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. If guilty, the person could be fined RM50,000, imprisoned for two years, or both.
It told people to stay away from posting or sharing any hateful ideas or material on social media sites and messaging apps that deal with the 3R issues: royalty, race, and religion.
In order to maintain peace and good order, the MCMC said it would collaborate with the police to take regular enforcement action against those involved, as required by law.
On April 1, the Office of the National Unity Minister sent a report to MCMC about a racist and offensive post someone made on X. The report asked the commission to look into the post and punish the person as needed. The Bernama
