MBAS Raids Industrial Premises Used As Unofficial School For Rohingya Children

ALOR SETAR: An industrial premises at the Shahab Perdana Commercial Complex here was raided by the Alor Setar City Council (MBAS) after it was believed to have been used as a school for Rohingya children without permission.

The operation, which was conducted on Thursday, was carried out following allegations that went viral on social media regarding the existence of the school.

MBAS stated that the raid was conducted to verify the information as well as to assess the premises’ compliance with usage conditions and applicable laws.

According to the statement, the inspection found that the industrial premises was rented to Rohingya individuals and used as a school housing 26 Rohingya children who lived in the surrounding area.

“The investigation also found that each student was charged a fee of RM100 per month.

“The MBAS Enforcement Division has recorded the details of the premises owner and tenant for further investigation purposes as well as for joint action with relevant agencies according to their respective jurisdictions,” the statement read.

MBAS clarified that action would be taken against the offence of misuse of industrial premises, while the case would be referred to the Kedah State Education Department to investigate the operation of an educational institution without permission.

According to the statement, the case was also referred to the Kedah State Malaysian Immigration Department for scrutiny regarding the permit status of the foreign nationals involved.

“MBAS will continue to intensify monitoring and enforcement to ensure that all premises within the city’s administrative area comply with approved usage conditions and the provisions of applicable laws.

“This action is important to ensure that public order continues to be preserved as well as to protect the interests of the community,” the statement added.
