KUALA LUMPUR: The national women’s indoor hockey team defeated Oman 12-1 in their second group game of the 2024 Asia Cup, which was contested in Chonburi, Thailand, today. Earlier in the day, they had defeated Vietnam 25-0 in their initial Group A encounter.

With hat tricks to finish off an incredible performance, midfielder Raja Norsharina Raja Shahbuddin and striker Siti Nur Arfah Mohd Nor put Malaysia on course for a semifinal berth.

At the Thailand National Sport University Kampus, Chonburi, Siti Nur Arfah opened the scoring in the sixth, eleventh, and 27th minutes, and Raja Norsharina scored on goal in the 18th, 29th, and 35th minutes.

The rout was completed by Juliani Mohamad Din (8 minutes), Nuraslinda Said (12 minutes), Nur Atira Mohamad Ismail (15 minutes), and Ellya Syahirah Ellias (24 minutes), with Maroa Al Saidi scoring Oman’s consolation goal in the 22nd minute. Defender Fazilla Sylvester Silin added her name to the scoresheet with a brace in the 12 and 34 minutes.

Even though Mohd Rodzhanizam Mat Radzi, the head coach, saw the two significant victories as excellent outcomes, he expressed optimism that his team will take advantage of the opportunities by finishing well, particularly on penalty corners.

“In the afternoon game, we had numerous chances to score but failed to do so. Players need to do a better job of finishing, particularly when they have penalty corners. In a statement issued by the Malaysian Hockey Confederation, he stated that goals are crucial in every game.

Tomorrow, Malaysia will face Iran and Kazakhstan in their remaining group matches.

The group’s top two teams advance to the semifinals.
