SYSTEMA has initiated the #GumHealthFirst campaign in an effort to address the widespread gum disease problem in Malaysia.

This campaign, which is still in partnership with the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) and the Malaysia Society of Periodontology (MSP), aims to increase public awareness of the vital role that healthy gums play in overall dental wellbeing.

The importance of gum disease prevalence in Malaysia was underlined by Dr. Noormi Othman, principal director of oral health at MOH.

Approximately 94.5% of adult Malaysians have periodontal disease.

Remarkably, 96% of adults between the ages of 35 and 44 report having gum health issues, making this problem even more common within this demographic.

In addition, 38.2% of adult Malaysians suffer from periodontitis, a severe form of gum disease.

“Oral health and overall well-being are directly correlated with gum health. Gum disease is a hidden but ubiquitous hazard that has been ingrained in our culture. Noormi stated, “The implications of this epidemic are significant and go well beyond oral health alone.

In addition to acting as the mouth’s first line of defence against bacteria and diseases, our gums give our teeth the vital support they need.

When taken care of properly, they serve as the body’s first line of defence, acting as a barrier to prevent inflammation and other health problems.

Tomotaka Oka, managing director of Southern Lion, stated that many people continue to disregard the health of their gums in spite of breakthroughs in dental treatment.

As a company committed to maintaining dental health and preventing gum disease, we are aware of the influence gum health has on general wellbeing.

By emphasising #GumHealthFirst and understanding its significance as the foundation of good teeth, Systema hopes to inspire Malaysians to take a more proactive approach to maintaining their gum health.

We are confident that gum disease can be prevented if enough people are aware of it. People can protect their gum health for the rest of their lives by adhering to a straightforward but regular oral hygiene regimen.

“We educate people about good oral hygiene habits, such as efficient brushing methods and the choice of appropriate oral care products, through the #GumHealthFirst campaign.

Our intention is to create enduring behaviours that support the best possible gum health,” Oka stated.

Systema’s toothpaste, which offers four times better gum protection and a comprehensive shield against bacterial buildup and gum discomfort, and its toothbrushes, which feature improved SlimTech technology and soft 0.02mm super tapered bristles with a 40% thinner brush head base that provides deeper reach to the back teeth and better cleaning, are at the forefront of this initiative.

People can lessen their chance of having gum-related problems and enhance their gum health by adding the appropriate dental products into their regular oral hygiene practices.

Dr. Mohd Faizal Hafez Hidayat, president of MSP, emphasised the dangers of gum disease, which include tooth loss and major medical issues.

“The effects of unhealthy gums extend beyond one’s dental health. They may result in major problems like tooth loss and challenges with routine tasks like speaking and chewing. However, it doesn’t end there.

The correlation between untreated gum disease and severe health illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, respiratory disorders, osteoporosis, and stroke emphasises the critical role that dental health plays in maintaining overall well-being.

Faizal emphasised how crucial it is to incorporate preventative steps into regular oral hygiene practices.

“Simple but essential behaviours are the first step in preventing gum disease. Maintaining optimal gum health requires daily flossing, brushing with fluoride toothpaste on a regular basis, and abstaining from tobacco products.
