BUSAN: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Dato’ Sri Fadillah Yusof led Malaysia’s delegation to the 16th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM16) and the 10th Mission Innovation Ministerial (MI-10) held at BEXCO, Busan, South Korea.

During the High-Level Dialogue on Power Transformation, Fadillah stressed that innovative transformation of the electricity supply system is the core of the clean energy transition.

“Without a strong, flexible, and modern grid, our energy transition goals cannot be fully achieved,” he said, adding that Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) has set a target of 70% renewable energy capacity by 2050. This will be achieved by harnessing solar, hydro, green hydrogen, and digital systems for energy demand management.

Malaysia also underlined the importance of regional interconnection through the ASEAN Power Grid to ensure long-term energy security.

At the High-Level Dialogue on Energy and Artificial Intelligence (AI), Malaysia highlighted that AI is no longer a theoretical concept but a reality reshaping the planning, management, and transformation of energy systems.

AI, the Deputy Prime Minister noted, has vast potential to boost efficiency, reliability, and energy demand forecasting, particularly in managing renewable energy integration. However, he cautioned that the rapid expansion of data centers and AI applications demands a more sustainable electricity supply.

“If managed responsibly, AI can become a driver of clean energy transition, while sustainable energy will be the foundation for AI growth,” he said.

Malaysia reaffirmed its support for the CEM-MI Agenda for Action, first launched in Brazil in 2024, calling it an essential framework to accelerate collective action and investment in clean energy infrastructure.

The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that success requires close collaboration between governments and the private sector, backed by clear policies, technological innovation, and sustainable financing mechanisms.

Malaysia’s participation, he added, reflects the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI, which promotes sustainability, inclusivity, and innovation to secure a more resilient and future-ready energy sector.

In conjunction with the ministerials, Fadillah also visited the Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) Saeol Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) site to review the latest nuclear safety technologies.

The visit, he said, opens opportunities for potential cooperation in nuclear energy as a low-carbon source, further supporting Malaysia’s clean energy transition.
