Malaysia Dismisses Claims of Hamas Hub, Reaffirms Strong International Ties
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 24 (VoM): Malaysia’s top police officer has strongly rejected allegations that the country is being used as a hub for Hamas operations, following remarks by a former US Treasury Department terrorism finance analyst.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the claims made by Jonathan Schanzer were baseless and misrepresented Malaysia’s stance on the Palestinian issue.
“The Palestinian struggle is indeed close to the hearts of Muslims in Malaysia, but this should not be misinterpreted. Malaysia continues to maintain good relations with the United States and other nations,” Khalid told reporters at a press conference on Wednesday.
Schanzer, who made the allegations on social media, also accused Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of lacking interest in peace between Palestine and Israel, comments that sparked a wave of criticism from Malaysian social media users.
Khalid reassured the public that Malaysia’s security remains under firm control, including at border areas. He credited this to close coordination between government agencies such as the Immigration Department, the Customs Department, and the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS).
“We are in constant communication, sharing intelligence and taking joint action to address any border-related threats,” he said.
The IGP emphasized that Malaysia’s position on the Palestinian cause does not compromise its commitment to international security cooperation, underscoring the country’s balanced approach to global relations.
