Dili, Sept 24 (VoM): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today delivered a special address at the National Parliament of Timor-Leste during his official visit, underscoring the central role of parliaments in upholding democracy and strengthening regional unity.

In his speech, Anwar stressed that parliament is the highest institution representing the people’s voice and the foundation of democratic governance. He emphasized that such institutions must be safeguarded and empowered not only in Malaysia and Timor-Leste but in every democracy worldwide.

“Democracy is built on the trust of the people, and from that trust comes stability, which allows a nation to play its rightful role as an active member of the ASEAN family,” Anwar said.

The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of Malaysia–Timor-Leste relations, reaffirming Malaysia’s strong support for Timor-Leste’s aspiration to become a full member of ASEAN. He noted that the country’s accession would not only reinforce regional cohesion but also create broader opportunities for cooperation in trade, education, and technological development.

Amid growing geopolitical challenges, Anwar called for stronger ASEAN connectivity and greater exploration of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and green energy, as vital drivers of a more inclusive and sustainable future for the region.

The address was a key highlight of Anwar’s official visit to Timor-Leste, reflecting Malaysia’s commitment to closer bilateral ties and deeper engagement within ASEAN.
