LRT3 Targeted to Begin Operations on Dec 31, Confirms Transport Minister Loke

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 17: The Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3) line linking Shah Alam and several surrounding areas in Selangor is slated to begin operations on December 31, pending the final results of ongoing safety and reliability tests, Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced in Parliament today.

Loke said the long-awaited project has entered its final phase of testing and commissioning, with the government prioritizing safety, technical compliance, and operational readiness before confirming the official launch date.

“The ministry, together with Prasarana Malaysia Berhad and other relevant authorities, is giving the highest priority to safety and operational reliability,” he said during his winding-up speech for the committee-stage debate of the 2026 Supply Bill in the Dewan Rakyat.

He emphasized that the projected opening date is subject to the outcome of key assessments, including the crucial fault-free run (FFR), a continuous test to ensure trains operate without technical issues.

“In rail services, the final test is the most important. The fault-free run must show zero technical glitches before we open the line to the public,” he added.

To support the new network, Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd has already recruited 956 personnel across various categories, including operations, engineering, technical roles, and supporting staff.

The LRT3 line, once launched, is expected to significantly enhance connectivity between Klang, Shah Alam, and the Greater Kuala Lumpur area, easing traffic congestion and improving daily commute times for residents.
