Irene Sofiya Laid to Rest

BATU PAHAT: The remains of Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal, 16, the victim of a murder at a school in Yong Peng, were laid to rest at the Kampung Parit Arshad Muslim Cemetery here at about 7.50pm on Sunday.

Earlier, the remains of the Form Four student were brought to her grandmother’s home in Kampung Parit Selamat, Yong Peng, at about 6.30pm after a post-mortem examination at Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital here was completed.

More than 100 family members, relatives, school friends, teachers and local residents accompanied the remains to the cemetery to pay their final respects.

On Saturday, the teenager was found unconscious and covered in blood in the school hall at about 5.50pm.

Johor Police Chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the victim had sustained several injuries to her head and body before she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police later arrested a 16-year-old boy in the Yong Peng area at about 7pm on the same day before obtaining a six-day remand order until Oct 9 to assist in the investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code, while the motive and cause of the incident remain under police investigation.
