MANCHESTER, Nov 7: Pep Guardiola says he could not ask for a better opponent than Liverpool as he prepares to take charge of his 1,000th match as a football manager when Manchester City hosts the Reds on Sunday.

“Liverpool has been the biggest rival in this country, and it could not be better, to be honest,” Guardiola told reporters on Friday. “I think we pushed Liverpool to be better, and Liverpool pushed us to be better. That’s for sure.”

Widely regarded as one of the greatest managers of all time, the former Spain international has amassed an extraordinary record of 12 domestic league titles across Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and City; three UEFA Champions League crowns; and countless other trophies.

Guardiola also reflected on being inducted into the League Managers Association (LMA) Hall of Fame 1,000 Club, joining football legends like Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsène Wenger.

“The journey, the experiences, have been unbelievable,” said Guardiola, whose first game as a coach came with Barcelona B in 2007. “The numbers are insane it’s been a lot of hard work, dedication, passion, and love. I love this game and the challenge of finding ways to overcome opponents.”

Of his 999 matches so far, Guardiola has won 715, a win rate of over 70%. Yet Liverpool has consistently been one of his toughest challenges since he joined Manchester City in 2016.

He has won only seven of 24 meetings against the Merseyside club, losing ten, including both fixtures last season as Arne Slot’s Liverpool dethroned City as Premier League champions.

With Arsenal potentially opening up a nine-point lead by the time of kickoff at the Etihad, Sunday’s clash could prove crucial in the title race.

“If Arsenal continues this way, not conceding goals or even clear chances, it will be almost impossible to catch them,” Guardiola admitted. “But the only thing we can do is win our games and stay close. You don’t win the title in November, but you can lose it.”

Despite the magnitude of the fixture, Guardiola confirmed that key midfielder Rodri, who recently returned from injury, is unlikely to be risked.

As Guardiola reaches his remarkable 1,000th match milestone, he remains focused on what has driven his career since day one: his love of the game and the pursuit of footballing perfection.
