Government Open to Fresh Probe into Taiping Prison Incident Following Suhakam Findings

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian government is prepared to facilitate further investigations into the controversial incident involving prison prospects at Taiping Prison after reviewing the findings and recommendations of a public inquiry conducted by the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam).

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is expected to continue or complete its investigations by taking into account the evidence and conclusions presented in Suhakam’s report, which was recently tabled before the Cabinet.

Speaking at the Home Ministry’s monthly assembly in Putrajaya on Monday, Saifuddin stressed that the government remains committed to transparency and accountability, regardless of who may be implicated.

“If an incident has been thoroughly investigated by an independent body with credible evidence and witness testimonies, and the findings indicate that further police action is necessary, then appropriate follow-up investigations must be carried out,” he said.

“The government’s position is clear: what is right will be upheld, and what is wrong will not be defended,” he added.

Saifuddin expressed confidence that Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail would ensure any outstanding investigative matters are addressed while considering Suhakam’s findings.

He also emphasised that the government would not shield any individual or institution from scrutiny in connection with the incident.

“Speaking the truth may be difficult, but in the long run it strengthens public trust and institutional integrity. This is an important test of accountability within our organisations,” he said.

The minister noted that despite the controversy, he remains proud of the Prison Department’s overall performance during his tenure and believes the agency has consistently worked to improve its standards and professionalism.

Last month, the Prison Department pledged full cooperation with relevant authorities in examining Suhakam’s public inquiry report. The department said it takes seriously all findings, recommendations and concerns raised, including allegations involving prison management and staff.

The Suhakam Public Inquiry Panel, in its final report on the prison disturbance that occurred on Jan 17, 2025, concluded that the incident resulted in the death of an elderly detainee. Among its recommendations was a proposal that the ageing prison facility be converted into a museum, arguing that it is no longer suitable for use as a correctional institution.

The government is expected to review the report’s recommendations further as authorities determine the next course of action regarding accountability, institutional reforms and the future of the Taiping Prison complex.
