PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) will conduct a review of the delimitation of electoral constituencies subject to the amendment of the Federal Constitution, said its Chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun.
He said the EC takes note of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s statement regarding the proposed amendment to the Federal Constitution to allow the addition of parliamentary seats for Sabah and Sarawak last Friday.
The addition of parliamentary seats later will also take into account the Electoral Constituencies of Malaya with the principle that the representation ratio of Sabah and Sarawak is also increased from the current position.
“In the context of the delimitation of Electoral Constituencies in the three study units, the EC will conduct a review of the delimitation of electoral constituencies subject to the amendment of the Federal Constitution,” he said in a statement today.
He said the EC will provide further explanation when there is an official decision and developments that allow the matter to be announced to the public.
Previously, the Prime Minister said the government agreed to increase the representation ratio of Members of Parliament from Sabah and Sarawak beyond the current rate, in line with the spirit of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
Anwar said the decision also involves a constitutional amendment to allow an increase in the participation of Members of Parliament from both states.
