DHAKA, Sept 10 (VoM): Bangladesh has expressed its interest in participating in peacekeeping operations under the United Nations if a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine leads to the creation of a buffer zone, Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain said on Wednesday.
Speaking at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hossain noted that while it is too early to discuss troop deployment, Bangladesh would be prepared to contribute if the UN establishes a peacekeeping mission.
“We hope there will be a ceasefire. If there is one, the United Nations will certainly play a role. We have strong experience in peacekeeping. Should there be any kind of peacekeeping activity, Bangladesh will definitely want to take part,” he told reporters.
His remarks follow a recent NBC News report suggesting that in the event of a ceasefire, the United States may lead the monitoring of a Russia-Ukraine buffer zone. The report also noted that for added security, troops could be drawn from non-NATO countries such as Saudi Arabia or Bangladesh.
Bangladesh is among the top contributors to UN peacekeeping missions worldwide, with thousands of personnel currently deployed in Africa, the Middle East, and other regions.
