KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 (Voice of Malaysia)— The 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) officially commenced today with the Interface between ASEAN Foreign Ministers and Representatives of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), setting a strong tone for Malaysia’s chairmanship under the theme of inclusivity and sustainability.

Held from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, the Interface was chaired by Malaysia’s Foreign Minister, Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan, and attended by foreign ministers from ASEAN Member States, along with the Foreign Minister of Timor-Leste, who joined the session as an observer.

In his opening remarks, Foreign Minister Mohamad reaffirmed Malaysia’s dedication to human rights and described the session as a vital starting point for this year’s ASEAN agenda. “The promotion and protection of human rights are not merely ideals but essential components of ASEAN community-building,” he said, emphasizing that human rights efforts must be “ASEAN-led and ASEAN-owned.”

The session highlighted two key initiatives currently under development by AICHR: a Regional Declaration on the Right to a Safe, Clean, Healthy, and Sustainable Environment and a Declaration on the Right to Development and Peace. Both documents are expected to address growing regional and global challenges such as environmental degradation, inequality, and the need for sustainable development.

Malaysia’s Representative to AICHR and Chair of AICHR 2025, Edmund Bon Tai Soon, presented the AICHR Annual Report 2025 and delivered the official AICHR Statement. A robust exchange of views followed, with ministers discussing the report’s findings and exploring strategies to further integrate human rights principles across ASEAN’s policies and frameworks.

In closing, Minister Mohamad expressed his confidence in AICHR’s continued role as a cornerstone of ASEAN’s efforts to promote social justice, equity, and human dignity. He also reiterated ASEAN’s firm commitment to making human rights a central pillar in the region’s long-term development agenda, especially in the lead-up to the ASEAN Vision 2045.

The Interface marks the first formal event of the week-long AMM and is widely viewed as a symbolic yet substantive launchpad for the region’s evolving human rights discourse.
