Malaysia’s Ambassador to Egypt, Datuk Mohd Tarid Sufian, says that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s four-day official visit to Egypt starting on Saturday (Nov. 9) will be a big moment in the relationship between Malaysia and Egypt.

He stated that President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s request for the visit would enable collaboration on a wider range of problems and issues impacting both countries.

The PM will arrive in Cairo at 6:30 pm local time, equivalent to 1:30 am Malaysian time.

Mohd Tarid said that on Sunday (Nov. 10), there will be a welcoming event at the Al Ittihadiya Palace. A meeting between the two countries will follow this.

“The main goal of the meeting is to improve relations between the two countries by working together more on trade and investment, security and defense, tourism, education, and religious issues.”

“We will also talk about possible new partnerships in the halal industry, health, water and renewable energy, natural resources, and protecting the environment,” he told Malaysian reporters here.

Mohd Tarid stated that the two leaders are expected to discuss regional and global issues that impact both parties, particularly Palestine.

He also said that Anwar and El-Sisi will be present at the signing of an MOU between Malaysia and Al-Azhar Al-Sharif for cooperation at the Faculty of Islamic Studies and an MOU between Malaysia and Egypt for cooperation in religious matters.

Anwar will also give a public speech at Al-Azhar University, meet with Malaysian students and hold events with local business leaders. He will also open the Proton Saga assembly operations center.

“This year is the 65th anniversary of the start of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Egypt. It is a crucial date for both countries, and this visit couldn’t come at a better time.”

“The 65th anniversary falls on the same day as the meeting between the two countries, November 10,” he said. “That’s because the establishment of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Egypt occurred on that day.”

Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, and Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii will be with the Prime Minister.

Last year, Malaysia’s fifth-largest business partner in Africa was Egypt. The two countries traded RM3.35 billion worth of goods.

The amount of trade between the two countries reached RM3 billion from January to September 2024, which is 21.4% more than the same time in 2023. It is believed that this year’s trade value will be higher than last year’s. The Bernama
