PENANG: Global semiconductor leader AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) has officially opened its new 209,000-square-foot office and engineering lab facility at GBS by the Sea in Bayan Lepas, marking a major milestone in the company’s two-decade presence in Malaysia.

The facility, designed to accommodate more than 1,200 employees, features open-plan workspaces and advanced engineering labs to drive innovation in semiconductor design, high-performance computing, and AI solutions.

The launch was officiated by Penang Chief Minister YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, alongside Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) CEO Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid, AMD Senior Vice President of Global Operations Keivan Keshvari, and Penang Site Lead Chuang-Li Khoo.

Chief Minister Chow hailed AMD’s over 50 years of presence in Penang as a testament to the state’s status as a sustainable, thriving investment hub. “As global trends move towards frontier technologies such as AI, Penang remains committed to supporting forward-looking investors like AMD in these transformative fields,” he said.

MIDA’s CEO, Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim, highlighted the facility as a symbol of Malaysia’s evolving partnership with AMD, shifting from manufacturing to integrated circuit (IC) design and high-value services. “By anchoring R&D and advanced capabilities here, AMD is creating high-quality jobs and nurturing a dynamic ecosystem where local talent can grow alongside global innovators,” he said.

Keshvari noted that the advanced facility reflects AMD’s long-term commitment to Malaysia’s semiconductor ecosystem. “It will enable us to deliver the next generation of high-performance, adaptive, and AI computing solutions while supporting Malaysia’s growth as a tech innovation hub,” he added.

Khoo, who has overseen AMD’s Penang operations since 2002, said the new site marks an exciting chapter in the company’s expansion. “This facility is designed to help our teams grow, collaborate, and deliver world-class solutions from a world-class workspace,” she said.

With expanded capabilities and a focus on innovation, the new Penang office is expected to play a pivotal role in AMD’s global operations and contribute significantly to Malaysia’s semiconductor industry growth.
