A reported case of food poisoning in Melaka is apparently linked to mussels
MELAKA: The Melaka Health Department has received a report about a case of food poisoning that may have been caused by mussels.
The victim, a 34-year-old man, was admitted to Hospital Alor Gajah on Saturday (June 8), according to State Health, Human Resources, and Unity Committee Chairman Ngwe Hee Sem.
“A case was recorded at Hospital Alor Gajah, although the reason is still unknown at this time. The Fisheries Department is still looking into the situation.
In a statement on Tuesday, June 11, he stated, “The patient was warded for examination, has already recovered, and will be allowed to go home soon.”
Wan Muhammad Aznan Abdullah, deputy director-general (management) of Fisheries, stated last Thursday, June 6, that studies of water and mussel samples revealed that Port Dickson waterways were still tainted with dangerous biotoxins.
According to the most recent testing, toxins were getting closer to the usual cutoff point of 800 parts per billion (ppb) and were even dropping.
For the public’s safety, he noted, the prohibition on mussel or clam farmers selling bivalves from Port Dickson remains in place. – BERNAMA
