A road accident involving two lorries in Sabak Bernam on Thursday evening resulted in a chemical spill involving nitric acid and calcium hypochlorite, prompting an emergency response and cleanup operation by the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department.
According to Ahmad Mukhlis Mokhtar, the department’s Assistant Director of Operations, authorities were alerted to the incident at approximately 7:13 PM.
“The accident occurred when a lorry transporting nitric acid collided with another lorry. Thankfully, no injuries were reported,” he said.
The crash caused a spill of approximately 40 drums of nitric acid and 24 drums of calcium hypochlorite—both classified as hazardous chemicals. The area was immediately cordoned off to prevent public exposure and environmental contamination.
Specialized Hazmat units from the fire department were deployed to contain and neutralize the chemicals, with the cleanup operation successfully concluding by 2:42 AM on Friday.
Authorities have not released further details on the cause of the accident, but investigations are ongoing. Residents were not required to evacuate, and the situation has since been declared safe.
The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department advised the public to exercise caution around hazardous transport vehicles and to report any signs of chemical leaks or spills immediately.
