Riyadh—24June 2025: In a significant diplomatic development, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman held a telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday to discuss the newly announced ceasefire between Iran and Israel, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
The crown prince welcomed the truce, expressing hope that the agreement would contribute to restoring security and stability across the Middle East, while also reducing the risk of further military confrontation in the region.
“The Kingdom hopes this ceasefire will help de-escalate tensions and pave the way for peaceful resolutions to ongoing regional conflicts,” SPA quoted Crown Prince Mohammed as saying.
During the call, Crown Prince Mohammed reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s longstanding position in favor of diplomatic dialogue and peaceful negotiation as the best path to resolving regional disputes.
The ceasefire follows a dramatic escalation in hostilities, including missile strikes by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar—the largest US military base in the Middle East—carried out on Monday in response to recent US-Israeli military actions targeting Iranian sites.
The Saudi crown prince had earlier expressed full support for Qatar during a separate call with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, condemning Iran’s missile attack as “unjustified and blatant aggression” against a fellow Gulf state.
While Saudi Arabia condemned the strike on Qatari soil, Tuesday’s call between Riyadh and Tehran signals a potential diplomatic opening amid a highly volatile regional climate.
His rare direct communication between the two powerful regional rivals—Sunni-majority Saudi Arabia and Shia-majority Iran—comes amid wider efforts by Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states to prevent the escalation of military conflict across the region.
Observers say the call could mark the beginning of cautious diplomatic engagement aimed at preserving regional stability and preventing further confrontations between Iran, Israel, and their respective allies.
