SEOUL, June 4 — South Korea’s newly sworn-in president has pledged to seek peace and reconciliation with North Korea, vowing to “heal the wounds of division” despite ongoing tensions and the nuclear threat posed by Pyongyang.

In his first address to the nation after taking office, the president struck a conciliatory tone, emphasizing the urgent need to revive inter-Korean dialogue and move beyond decades of hostility on the Korean Peninsula.

“We must not allow past conflicts to define our future. I am determined to open a new chapter of peace, where we can heal the deep wounds that have long divided our people,” he said. “The path to reconciliation may be difficult, but peace is not an option—it is a responsibility.”

The President reiterated South Korea’s firm stance on national security and its commitment to international cooperation on denuclearization. At the same time, he called for increased humanitarian efforts, including the reunification of families separated by the Korean War and expanded cross-border assistance.

Tensions between the two Koreas have intensified recently, with North Korea accelerating its nuclear weapons program and carrying out numerous missile tests. Despite these provocations, the new administration appears set on re-engagement, signaling a shift from the more confrontational policies of past governments.

Political analysts suggest the President’s message could mark the beginning of a renewed diplomatic approach aimed at fostering stability and reducing military risk on the peninsula.

However, questions remain about North Korea’s willingness to engage. Pyongyang has long demanded the end of joint U.S.–South Korea military exercises as a condition for returning to talks.

Still, the new leader’s outreach has been welcomed by observers as a hopeful step toward easing long-standing regional tensions and paving the way for potential breakthroughs in inter-Korean relations.
