Six Arrested in Corruption Case for Monopolizing Government Department Projects
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested six individuals, including a civil engineer and three company owners, on suspicion of bribery to monopolize all projects awarded by two government departments in two districts in Sarawak.
According to sources, the suspects, all local men aged between 40 and 70, were detained between 7 AM and 12 PM today during a special operation conducted at several locations across Sarawak.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the scheme is believed to have been ongoing since 2006, with contractors suspected of allowing their licenses to be used in exchange for commissions of up to 10 percent of the project value.
“At the same time, the civil engineer involved is suspected of receiving payment for assisting in securing projects for the departments,” the source said.
During the operation, MACC also seized a Proton X70 vehicle, approximately RM450,000 in cash, and jewelry.
Meanwhile, MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations) Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya confirmed the arrests when contacted.
He stated that the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009, and all suspects will be brought to the Magistrate’s Court in Miri, Sibu, and Kuching tomorrow for remand applications.
