Saudi Arabia’s embassy continues diplomatic duties in Afghanistan
Sunday marked the start of official activities at the Saudi embassy in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan.
“Based on the desire of the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to provide all services to the brotherly Afghan people, it has been decided to resume the activities of the mission of the Kingdom in Kabul starting on December 22,” the embassy said on X on Sunday.
Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan have a history that goes back to 1932, when the Kingdom was the first Islamic country to help the Afghan people through difficult times.
In the past few years, Saudi Arabia’s humanitarian arm, KSRelief, has started a lot of projects in Afghanistan. These projects have focused on providing aid, health care, school services, water, and food security.
Additionally, Riyadh participated in all international donor conferences and pushed for safety and peace in Afghanistan after years of wars.
In August 2021, when the Taliban took back power in Afghanistan after the US left the country, Saudi Arabia pulled its officials out of Kabul.
It did say, though, that it would resume consular services in the country in November 2021. It also sends help through its King Salman Relief Centre organisation.
